Close textual analysis misses the point of the Booker - that the winning novel is but one book published, in what I have calculated to be (on average over the last 10 years) one of 123, 206 new books in the UK alone. I think that in the case of the Booker Prize that a method of looking at the overview of the novel works well. ![]() I like the idea of using data to approach novels, owing to reading Franco Moretti's Graphs, Maps, Trees many times during my BA and MA. I have been using lots of data to formulate my research - The Guardian has a great selection of infographic data on 'How to win the Booker" see it here. ![]() I'm writing an essay on The Life of Pi by Yann Martel in relation to the Booker Prize, and the position of the novel and the author in this network of commercial activity.
